Mark Buckingham

Mark Buckingham has been working in comics professionally for the past twenty five years.

Born in Clevedon, South West of England, in 1966, Mark has always focused on art as a career and began his formal

art training at Filton Technical College. After a year working in Animation for Aardman he pursued a 3 year Design Degree at Staffordshire University.It was whilst there he began to work seriously toward a career in comic books, and was already inker on DC Comics “Hellblazer” by the time he completed his education.

From there he went on to work with Neil Gaiman as artist on “Miracleman” as well as other Gaiman written works such as “Sandman” and “Death”. Along side this he also developed a successful career as one of DC’s top inkers, especially at Vertigo on comics such as “Sandman” and “Death: The High cost of Living” , and also produced painted artwork for 2000AD strip “Tyranny Rex”.

He has also pencilled a huge number of Vertigo titles including “Death: Time of your Life”, “Shade: The Changing Man”, “Books of Magic”, “Swamp Thing”, “Invisibles”, “The Witching” and many more.

In the mid 90′s Mark moved to Marvel where he inked “Generation X” and Ghost Rider 2099 before focusing on developing his penciling career on titles such as “Dr.Strange” and “Star Trek Unlimited”.

In 1997 he returned to DC as a full time penciler,initially working on “Batman:Shadow of the Bat”, followed by a relaunch of super team “The Titans”.

In 2000 he began a successful 2 year reinvigoration of the Spider-man titles for Marvel on “Peter Parker:Spider-man” with Paul Jenkins, as well as guest appearances in other Marvel books such as “The Fantastic Four”. It was also at this time that Mark first collaborated with Bill Willingham on “Merv Pumpkinhead-Agent of Dream”.

Since 2002 Mark has been the regular artist on Fables for DC Comics, working with its writer and creator Bill Willingham, for which they have earned numerous comic industry awards. In 2007, together with Steve Leialoha, Buckingham won the Eisner Award for the Best Penciller/Inker Team. He has also illustrated Willingham’s Down the Mysterly River prose novel published by Tor books. In addition Mark is also the regular cover artist on IDW’s Doctor Who comic and is currently also drawing interior art for this autumns relaunch of the book. He also recently worked with Neil Gaiman on a comic strip for the Brilliant Book of Doctor Who 2012 for BBC Books. He can also currently be found drawing back up strips in Eric Powell’s The Goon.

When not drawing all of the above, Mark can be found, along with his lovely Spanish wife Irma and pet dog Willy, in Asturias in Northern Spain, or his home city of Bristol.
